Larry Hoskins' story

Life was looking black for Larry Hoskins...literally. An ordinary summer day weed-eating the yard was cut short when a piece of broken cord flew up and sliced across his cornea. In a moment, he lost most of the sight in that eye. A corneal transplant was followed by weekly check-ups, procedures, and injections. A professional truck driver, Larry lost his income because he couldn’t keep his commercial driver’s license–he had to have both eyes to drive an eighteen-wheeler. An artist, he worried he would lose his ability to paint pictures. Then, he lost his financial footing. While his wife worked to keep the family afloat, it was a dark time. “It was a nightmare,” he said. “The bills were horrifying, so bad I thought I should just risk losing the eye because of the expense.”

But while his eyesight was weak, his faith was strong. “Most of it was having the confidence that I could ask and He would help.” And He did...with the Mother’s Day Offering, which helped ease the burden of medical bills. “Amazing is not a strong enough word,” Larry said. “It’s a blessing from God that there is such an organization. The fear of losing my sight was a nightmare. You can have fear and be terrified because you don’t have insurance, worried thinking you will be turned away. Not with Baptist Hospital. I am so glad I found out about the Mother’s Day Offering.”

Today, Larry Hoskins is seeing clearly...and his eyes are firmly fixed on his goals. He’s back at work, and he’s back to expressing himself as an artist, painting oil landscapes on canvas and panels. “I’m very excited about my blessings,” he concluded. “I can continue painting and they are getting better and better. My theme is painting God’s creation. I do it because everything I see, He created, and I am blessed that I can see it. Till I got this help from the Mother’s Day Offering, I was willing to give up my eye. The Offering is helping me keep my vision. Thank you!”
